Termite
March, Shanghai @ddmwarehouse
during the 2002 Shanghai Bienniel
This piece was done
in collaboration with Zhao Gang.
Inspired by Shanghai's bamboo construction scaffolds, Shelley built this
structure with native bamboo and plastic tie wraps he bought from some
construction workers at a building site near the gallery. The work is
similar to other Shelley Tunnel pieces but covered with a translucent
skin and lit from within like a paper lantern. During a video-taped performance,
Gang painted the skin, working inside the tunnel, while Shelley completed
the bamboo construction at the end. The video monitors displayed the goings
on inside the tunnel, but otherwise the images appeared on the surface
as if painted by a phantom brush.
